All cliffs of the region, from Villaviciosa Ribadesella, have great geological and paleontological interest, being exceptionally rich in ictites, fossilized dinosaur footprints, highlighting the spectacular Jurassic Museum of Asturias in Colunga, must see with children.

We are in the middle of a region where some of the most important shrines of Franc-cantabric Upper Paleolithic Art (from Tito Bustillo to Altamira, in neighboring Cantabria) and a few hundred meters from the Cave of the Sidrón. With nearly 4 km of galleries, this is the largest Asturian cave excavated in not Carboniferous limestones, which has a high geological and biospeleological interest: in that cave also houses the most important site of Homo neanderthalensis in Iberian Peninsula; Neanderthal Man is a hominid species belonging to the same genus to which modern humans belong (Homo sapiens), which appeared in Europe about 230,000 years ago; the certainty of their humanity and know that both species have coexisted for thousands of years until their extinction about 30,000 years ago, Neanderthal Man is one of the most fascinating enigmas for modern paleoanthropology, and the site of the Cave of the Sidrón is already contributing to solve. For all these reasons, the cavity and its surroundings have been declared a Natural Monument by the Government of the Principality of Asturias.

The old Celtic culture that the Romans found when arriving to this land 2,000 years ago has survived to this day in the region, through ancient dances and melodies, as well as the management of domestic animals themselves. Our asturcon ponies are genetically related with the ponies from the British Isles and its characteristic amble step were especially prized by the Romans, the historian Suetonius says that among the horses that preferred the Emperor Nero was an asturcon. Also our old Atlantic culture survives in the words, place names and Asturian words with Celtic root; in traditional decorative details that still adorn the Asturian typical wooden shoes (madreñes), constructions and traditional furniture (barns, houses, coffers…); in legends and myths, as well as some pagan customs and rituals linked to magical nights like Midsummer (Saint John’s Night). A few meters from our house, on the porch of the Church of Samartín of Borines (XVI century, although mentioned in a donation from the Asturian King Ramiro II, in the X century), in the shadow of two great ancient yews (texos) several times centenarians there is a funerary inscription from the Astur Ablaidac clan. The yew (Taxus baccata) remains today as then as the sacred tree of Asturias par excellence and in the Sueve mountains is even possible to watch and visit the largest yew forest in Europe. The ablaidacs were a clan of the tribe Astur Luggons, that inhabited these lands; his name could be explained by Welsh Celtic term blaid, meaning «wolf». In our valley they have located the remains of important Celtic fortified settlements (forts of Argandenes, Antrialgu, Viyao) and valuable gold jewelery, masterpieces of  Astur goldsmith, like the Moñes headband.

The almost unknown Asturian Romanesque, overshadowed by the dazzling Art of the Kingdom of Asturias, is especially striking in the area, with important exhibitions in Villamayor (Council of Piloña) or in the neighbor Council of Villaviciosa. Worth discovering and calmly enjoy these little gems scattered by the typical rural setting in the heart of the countryside.

The region also stands out for the large number of houses and rural palaces, like the L’Omedal Tower (Miyares), the Palace of Cutre (La Goleta), the Palace of Rubianes (Cerecea) or the Palace of Sorribes (Sevares), residence in many cases of returned emigrants of America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (the so-called «Indianos»), inside which treasured fantastic libraries, arrived by sea from Britain and France, avoiding the Spanish censorship, that nurtured a generation of great Asturians illustrated. There is also a Latin tombstone inside the church of Samartín de Borines referring to the healing properties of the sulphurous waters and carbonated that welling here. The Borines Bath was one of the most important health and recreation centers throughout the Bay of Biscay in the late nineteenth century and was attended by important personalities from the political and social life of the period.
